Best Start helps meet the needs of pregnant women and teens, pregnant women living in isolation or situations that could put their pregnancy at risk, or who have limited access to information and services.

Healthy Birth Weight
A healthy birth weight is important for a baby's development. A low birth weight can mean health problems right away and throughout life.

  • how to cook healthy meals and have fun at the same time

  • a chance to meet other pregnant women to share problems and find solutions
  • Health Unit nurses and nutritionists offer question and answer sessions for participants
  • breastfeeding support before and after delivery
  • community kitchens help you learn how to cook healthy meals, explore new recipes and ways to stretch your food budget
  • free food supplements and prenatal vitamins
  • lots of books, videos & information to borrow
  • introduction to the Toy Bus and Kids Corp programs
  • support and counselling

CPNP assists communities to develop programs for at-risk pregnant women to improve birth outcomes. Under CPNP, community-based projects can offer food supplements, nutrition information, support, education, referral, and counselling on such lifestyle issues as alcohol abuse, stress, and family violence.
